Self guided walking
This is a holiday for you walkers that are more experienced and don’t want to come under the umbrella of a guided walk. You will probably be a group of family or friends and feel that with our experience of local walks and conditions you will be able to enjoy planning and undertaking your own walking itinerary using “ The Country House Almunecar “ as your ideal walking base.
We can cater for larger groups. Please contact us for more details about accommodation and prices.
Group guided walks
We have 6 separate walks on 6 different days, picking you up from the house at 9am and finishing the days walk at about 5pm. The other day is “ airport or changeover “ day. Your evening meal is prepared and served at The Country House Almunecar at around 8pm.
What are our walks like?
A typical week’s itinerary is:
Day 1. Orientation day
We collect you from Malaga airport and drive to the ancient and historical town of Almuñécar, your base for the week. About an hour and a halfs drive. We take you to “Country House Almuñécar” (see Accommodation), We all meet up in the evening for a meal and get-together to discuss the coming week’s activities.
Day 2. "Cerro de Caleta”
After breakfast we meet up, make sure we´ve everything we need for the day ahead and set off to explore the “Cerro de Caleta,” a 15 minute drive away. This is the first of our coastal walks in a National Park. ( We will visit beaches, so bring your swimming gear)We start from The Torre de Cerro Gordo and then hike to the “Torre de Caleta,” probably the best known of the series of 5 watchtowers constructed in the past to protect the coastal inhabitants from raids by pirates and corsairs.
We will picnic at the Torre before making our way back to our start point. This hike is approximately 5 hours long and of medium difficulty. The views on this part of the coast are stunning with small sandy bays hidden amongst the backdrop of the rugged Cerro Gordo Mountains.
We then drive back to Almuñécar and the house to organize our evening meal. Normally after every walk we try and stop at a local bar or café to have something to drink and relax and chat about the days walk etc.
Day 3. "Junta de la Rios"
After breakfast we drive north to the Pueblo Blanco of Otivar (20 minutes). 3 km. further on, we come down to the gorge of La Junta de Los Rios. This beautiful place is carved deep into the mountains and provides a refuge of greenery and water for the local flora and fauna, as you can see from our photos. We spend the day here exploring, slowly walking up the gorge, admiring the large cave with its stalagmites and stalactites, and swimming in the many pools that lie below the waterfalls. It would be hard to find a more beautiful setting anywhere in the world. We picnic and make our way back to the start point. This hike is of 4 hour’s duration and of moderate difficulty.
We then drive back to Almuñécar together stopping off at a café on the way. Again up to the house to organize the evening meal.
Day 4. Caves at Nerja and "El Pico Del Cielo"
This is a fantastic days outing. After breakfast, we meet up and take a short visit to the pretty coastal town of Nerja, or to be more precise, the Caves at Nerja in the small pueblo of Maro.
We start our day at Nerja with a visit to the famous caves – find out about it here. The caves were re-discovered in 1959 by local boys potholing. You will be awestruck by the natural beauty of these caves...everybody is! We spend about an hour and then set out on the days hike, up the valley inland, slowly wending our way on a well-tested path up through the river beds and tree-lined valley, emerging to climb slowly to a height of over 1000 metres. Our destination: El Pico de Cielo.Peak in the Sky. The views from here are panoramic. Here we picnic and enjoy the scenery. We then make our way back down to Nerja. This hike is about 6 hours in total and of medium difficulty.
We then drive back to Almuñécar together. During the week we will be holding a BBQ or two at the house.
Day 5. Optional rest day with a hike for those who want to carry on
We feel that a do-it-yourself day is needed at this point of your holiday. We offer you the chance to chill-out in Almuñécar or take a bus into Granada or Malaga – about an hour´s journey –and enjoy your day there: shopping, visiting restaurants, historic sites and museums. We provide all your maps and timetables, etc. and will happily help you plan your day. For those of you who want another hike day, we will select a hike appropriate for the group. Also this is the day when you can try something different if you want, such as canoeing on the open sea, sailing and windsurfing horseriding, mountain biking etc.. We can organize these activities for you although they are not included in the prices quoted.
Day 6. Salobrena, the Castle and Wetlands
Breakfast, and then a short drive to neighboring Salobreña, another coastal town with a lot of history and a fine castle on the hill dominating the town.Today´s hike will take in a visit to the castle and a walk through the coastal wetlands which are a safe haven for many birds. This is a protected area and very beautiful.
Today´s hike includes, as always, a picnic lunch at our halfway point and is about 5 hours in total and of moderate difficulty. We visit the castle at the beginning of this walk because it is quite a trek uphill and not a good idea at the end of the day!
We then drive back to Almuñécar together, stopping on the way for a coffee and then organizing the evening meal.
Day 7. 405 metres in altitude and quite a stiff climb!
Crossing the River Toba
After breakfast, we head just north of Salobreña to a beautiful area named by the Arabs as “The Hidden Gardens.” Here we will undertake a hike of approximately 5 hours and is of medium difficulty.
We start at the first of three villages: Guajar Fondon – abandoned in the early part of the last century by the population who fled to Catalonia in search of work.Like the other two villages, Guajar Faraguit and Guajar Alto, it is now being restored and re-populated. From Guajar Fondon, we cross the Barranco Rendate and make our way up to the Castillejo (Little Castle) we head to the next village of Guajar Faraguit, pausing on our way at the Spring of Santa, cross the River Toba until we reach the village of Guajar Faraguit where we stop for our picnic. Above us is Guajar Alto, our last destination. This last part of the walk takes us away from the river and into the forests and mountains above the villages. Stunning scenery.
After our hike, it´s back to Almuñécar and our “Goodbye” evening meal together.
Day 8. Airport day
*Please note that the itinerary of the walks can change due to local weather conditions. Some of the higher altitude walks might be re-arranged if there is low cloud or rain on that particular day. Having said that, the weather conditions on the Costa Tropical are normally very pleasant and temperate all the year round.
